Tour of the
Dengie Marshes Road Race
Held
in memory of Chris Negus
Sunday 30th March
On Sunday 3oth March Joe Skipper, Brett
Travers and Dick Wood from VC Revolution Cycling Club
took part in the 111 kilometer Tour of the Dengie
Marshes Road Race, near Burnham-on-Crouch. The event was
held in memory of Chris Negus, a rider from South
Woodham Ferrers, who was killed in a collision with a
car whilst out training in January.

90% of the race was on unclassified farm
roads that were devoid of hedges and therefore provided
no shelter on the windswept Dengie marshes. Riders also
had to contend with an off-road farm track section on
each of the 6 laps that, following two weeks of
inclement weather, tested their bike handling skills to
the limit as they battled through the mud on their
lightweight racing bikes.
The initial rush to get to the front on
the narrow wind swept roads saw the 70 rider field of
predominantly Elite and 1st category riders
splinter into small groups before the end of the first
lap. The race service was forced into action as riders,
covered in mud, punctured on the dirt strewn roads.
Both Skipper and Wood rode determinedly
to finish in the top 30, an impressive achievement
considering the class of the opposition and the
conditions. Travers had a bad day at the office
following a mechanical problem.
The race was won by Billy Joe Whenham,
who won this winter’s mountain bike series at Thetford,
he clearly put his off-road skills to use in this event.
On Sunday, VCR riders will be out in
force again for the road races promoted by the Maldon &
District Cycling Club.
