Glade CC Spring Road Race
On Sunday 13th
April, seven members of VC Revolution (Paul Dewberry,
Andrew Elderfield, Hugo Hocknell, Richard Norris, Joe
Skipper, Brett Travers and Richard Wood) travelled to
Saffron Walden to compete in the Glade Cycling Club’s 80
mile spring road race.
The race consisted
of just over seven laps of an undulating 11 mile
circuit, which included a lengthy climb from Littlebury
over the M11 motorway. The pace was frantic from the
start as riders aggressively tried to distance
themselves from the main bunch. A break of five riders
established itself on the second lap and this was to be
the race winning break. Skipper, Hocknell and Travers
all attempted to bridge across to the move but were
unsuccessful.
The hilly nature of
the circuit ruined the chances of Elderfield, Norris and
Wood. Hocknell (puncture) and Dewberry (damaged wheel)
were both unfortunate to suffer mechanical problems when
riding well.
Eventually, the
chasing bunch fragmented and Skipper, showing his
strength and racing potential, finished in an excellent
10th position. Travers, having been dropped
on the climb towards the end of the race, chased back to
the bunch in his usual determined manner to finish,
which half the field of riders failed to do.
This Sunday sees the
inaugural VC Revolution road race promotion based on a
circuit through the villages of Layer de la Haye, Layer
Breton and Great Wigborough. The action starts at 9.00am
and the 64 mile race is expected to finish at round
11.30a.m. Skipper, Hocknell and Travers carry the
promoting club’s hopes. Excellent vantage points include
the reservoir and the (church) hill on the approach to
Layer de la Haye.
