SERRL Road Race - 4th May 2008
On Sunday 4th May, I competed
in a South East Road Race League event for 3/4 category
riders in Kent.
A bunch of 70 riders set off on a warm
spring morning for the 100
kilometre race on an undulating circuit, which was to be
completed 9½ times. On the first lap a group of eight
riders quickly established a lead on the main bunch. A
lap later, I was within 20 metres of getting across to
the break on the main climb to the finish, with two
other riders. Unfortunately, it was not to be.
The course, based around the pretty
villages of Benenden, Sissinghurst and the medieval town
of Cranbrook, passed a number of Kent’s distinctive oast
houses, a reminder of the county’s once thriving brewing
industry.
Although the course had no severe hills,
the fact that it was a short (6 mile) circuit meant that
the race was consistently hitting the undulations, which
led to over half the field retiring.
Riders within the main bunch were
consistently trying to escape off the front and the
aggressive riding split the peleton on numerous
occasions
Malcolm Davies (Kent Cycles) won the
race; I finished in what was left of the main bunch.
