Ed Taylor Memorial Road Race - Thurlow

Sunday 26th April

Ed Taylor Memorial Road Race Report

Sunday 26 April saw the latest round of the season-long Eastern Road Race League competition, the Ed Taylor Memorial Road Race which is a Regional A event for 2nd, 3rd and 4th category riders.

This event was held over 10 laps of a very hilly 5 mile circuit at Thurlow in Suffolk. VCR members pinning on a number for this one were powerhouse Dick Woods, seasoned roadmen Alan Lawrence, Brett Travers and Hugo Hocknell, Ben Wright and season debutant Andrew Minns.

With challenging hills coming every two-and-a-half miles, this race often breaks up the field and weeds out the weaker riders. Andrew was particularly concerned as his winter campaign hadn’t been the best but by staying out of trouble and eventually finishing in the bunch, he was more than pleased.

Alan felt he wasn’t firing on all cylinders so his vast road racing experience and knowledge of the circuit told him to sit in the bunch, follow the wheels and conserve energy where he could. He finished safely in the bunch and was glad to get some quality training into the legs.

Brett was the action man of the day getting himself into a break halfway through the race alongside Richard Whitehorn (Glade CC) and Phil Hargreaves (VC Norwich). They were soon to be joined by Ben Nicholson (Interbike) and a member of the Cambridge CC. Soon after, this group was joined by 5 others including Brett’s team mate Hugo Hocknell and for a while this looked like being the move of the race. Sadly this wasn’t to be and the group all came back together again. The remainder of the race proved largely uneventful with eventual winner being Cambridge CC strongman Digby Symons.

A good days racing for all concerned.
