Thetford MTB Racing - Winters Series 1
A
Revolution in the Forest
On
Remembrance Sunday, 500 mountain bike riders braved the
elements and converged on Thetford Forest, in Norfolk,
for the first race of four in the Marin Winter Series.
It was
rather poignant that the biggest challenges the riders
faced out on the 6.5 mile circuit were the two bomb
holes - the forest is close to a number of RAF and USAF
bases - created during World War II. This was where most
of the spectators watched in anticipation of a few
spills and they did not go home disappointed.
Colchester’s newest cycling club - VC Revolution - was
well represented at the event. Andrew Elderfield, known
more for his track racing skills than his off-road
ability, produced a fantastic ride to finish second in
the 2-lap fun race.

In the
2-hour endurance event, Paul Thomas and Brett Travers
both performed well. Thomas, after a steady start, used
his experience of riding technical single track to speed
round four laps of the course in the allotted two hours,
finishing in 31st place. Travers, more at
home racing on the road, started impressively, but had
to dig into his energy reserves to finish in the points.
Paul Selby completed VC Revolution’s noteworthy display
by completing 3 laps of the leg sapping circuit. The
next event in the series is to be held on 2nd
December, again at Thetford Forest.
